Representation
For my magazine production I designed
a hip-hop magazine were I represented the culture of the stereotypical people
that would view a hip-hop (gangster/rap) magazine. The main way I represented
the genre of hip-hop throughout the front page, contents page and the double
page spread, was the layout and how it was conventionally simple but modern.
The reason I made my magazine like this is because of the youth that read this
specific genre of magazine are not interested in loads of writing and reading
articles so I had to entice them by design and colours of the magazine. Also
another big part of attracting the target audience is the type of images used.
For instance, if the image was very basic and simple and nothing special, when
someone saw the front cover of the magazine they would not be amazed or even
please therefore would not buy the magazine as they feel it won’t be very good.
The pose of the model has a big impact on the way the magazine is represented
to the target audience. The type of shot also distincts the representation the
magazine is trying to show. For example, if the shot is looking up at the model
this would represent the model signifies power and leadership. I have used
certain language to attract my target audience, this is called audience
positioning. For example, I have used a pull quote in my double page spread
which says, ‘’It’s outta the fryin pan and into the fire’’.
The reason I have used slang such as ‘outta’
and ‘fryin’ is because of how youth stereotypically talks to one another now a
day.
